Thurgood Marshall College Fund To Host Inaugural
Awards Of Excellence In Nashville, Tenn
Five Local Community Leaders To Be Honored

Nashville, Tenn.- June 12, 2008 – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will host its Inaugural Nashville Awards of Excellence at the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum – 222 5th Ave., South – Nashville, Tenn. at 6:00PM. This exciting evening hosted in honor of distinguished Nashville leaders will include a reception, dinner and awards program. Proceeds from the Awards of Excellence will help TMCF to provide merit scholarships and programmatic support to students at 47 public Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) including six law schools.

The Awards of Excellence was created to honor outstanding individuals who have excelled in their respective fields. In addition, the five honorees exemplify professional and civic excellence, and share Justice Marshall’s concern for civil rights and his passion for justice. The program’s Mistress of Ceremony will be Vicki Yates of News Channel 5. The event is Chaired by: Ron Corbin, Dierdre Francis-Dickerson, Francis S. Guess, Melvin N. Johnson, John L. Seigenthaler and Pamela Mishaw Thomas.

“The distinguished recipients of the Awards of Excellence serve as role models for Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s student leaders,” said Dwayne Ashley, President and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. “I hope that volunteers and community leaders throughout the country will join these very deserving honorees in emulating their commitment to upholding Justice Marshall’s legacy.”

The Awards of Excellence events were established in the Newark, NJ area in 2001 to increase awareness of the TMCF and to raise funds for merit scholars attending its member colleges and universities. These events have since been held in Philadelphia, PA; Memphis, TN; Tulsa, OK; Louisville, KY; Charlotte, NC; Richmond, VA; Seattle, WA; Baltimore, MD; Jackson, MS; South Florida; Milwaukee, WI; and San Francisco, CA.
