UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS – May 12 & 13, 2008 – Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) President and CEO, Dwayne Ashley will deliver the commencement speech at TMCF member school, University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), St. Thomas, on Monday, May 12, 2008 and St. Croix on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. UVI has an overall student population of approximately 2,500 full-time, part-time and graduate students on its two campuses. It offers a high-quality, affordable liberal arts education and professional programs in a culturally diverse environment.
Dwayne Ashley leads TMCF’s long-term planning and guides its overall strategic direction to achieve its ability to serve as a comprehensive higher education assistance organization. Under his leadership, the organization has surpassed $80 million in support raised for scholarship, capacity building and programs for the nation’s 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 22 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.
Mr. Ashley has become a sought after expert in the fields of youth leadership, talent development and fundraising. Recently, the TMCF member school alumnus was recognized for the fourth consecutive year inclusion in Ebony Power 150, the magazine’s annual list of the 150 most influential African-Americans.
“The University of the Virgin Islands provides its students extensive training in the fields of business, education, humanities and nursing to become the future leaders of our nation,” said Ashley. “I’m excited participate in the commencement as the scholars transition into their respective fields.”
Mr. Ashley’s passion for knowledge and the desire to share what he has learned with others has led him to author books on non-profit management, fundraising, and youth career development. His most recent literature, DREAM INTERNSHIPS! It’s Not WhoYou Know…It’s What You Know!, was created to empower students with the knowledge to search and obtain an internship in a competitive workforce.
