TMCF Fulfilling National School Reform & Partnership Initiative Mission As Five Students Attend Its 2008 Civic Responsibility Student Conference In Washington, DC
New York – April 7, 2008 – Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and its Center for Innovative HBCU School Reform Partnership brought together five students to participate in the Fund’s 2008 Civic Responsibility Student Conference (CRSC). The second annual CRSC was hosted from Tuesday, April 1st - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in the nation's capitol. In addition to these five, more than 80 students from the Fund's 47 member public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participated as well.
The Center for Innovative HBCU School Reform Partnership is a TMCF program that is supported by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The aim of the Center is to help close the academic achievement gap and to increase college readiness and college-going rates among students attending several small high schools created in affiliation with several TMCF member universities.
All participating students had GPAs of 3.0 or higher and expressed a keen interest in public service and the desire to study political science at the college level. As a result of their participation in the CRSC, they were provided with an enriching experience to learn about the legislative process first-hand through meetings with congressional representatives and educational workshops.
The following students and sites were participants:
- Jabril Muhammad - Capitol Academy (Boys), Baton Rouge, LA
- Courtney Kelly - Capitol Academy (Girls), Baton Rouge, LA
- Jessica Smith - J. H. Jones High School, Houston, TX
- Jordan Byrd - Coppin Academy, Baltimore, MD
- Josh Glover - Royal Academy, Brookshire, TX
“These talented students have excelled academically and exemplified leadership qualities in their schools and communities,” said Dwayne Ashley, President and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. “I am certain that the program has greatly enhanced their ability to compete for internship and job opportunities on “the Hill.” The information, resources and the opportunity to connect one-on-one with members of Congress has provided a life changing experience”.
