Tryan McMickens recalls the "huge blow" he felt when, as one of only a few dozen African-American students at a large, predominantly white public high school in suburban Atlanta, he heard his favorite teacher advise him not to even consider applying to a historically black college. "She told me those schools would not be the best fit for me because those schools are not the best schools," he says.

Daytona Beach News Journal: Are Historically Black Colleges Worth our support?
Economists Roland Fryer of Harvard University and Michael Greenstone of MIT recently undertook a dense statistical analysis which concludes that attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities may once have conferred a "wage advantage" for African-American graduates relative to black graduates of majority white institutions -- but no longer. But do the data actually support such a conclusion, or the Fryer-Greenstone suggestion that the "unique educational services" once provided by HBCUs to black students have now disappeared? Hardly.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) President and CEO, Dwayne Ashley will deliver the commencement speech at TMCF member school, University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), St. Thomas, on Monday, May 12, 2008 and St. Croix on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. UVI has an overall student population of approximately 2,500 full-time, part-time and graduate students on its two campuses. It offers a high-quality, affordable liberal arts education and professional programs in a culturally diverse environment.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), a premier organization in Black Higher Education that develops and prepares the next generation of leaders by providing resources, opportunities and advocacy to public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), students and alumni, announced today the launch of its enhanced Web site, www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org, which includes a new college search engine, TMCF TV, a collection of video programming, financial aid and scholarship information.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) president and CEO, Dwayne Ashley honored actor Laurence Fishburne with an Award of Excellence for his portrayal in “Thurgood” a one-man play, which opened last night, Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Booth Theater in New York City. The play is based on the life and times of the late Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American to sit on the United States Supreme Court and NAACP’s lead counsel in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case.

For the fourth consecutive year, Ebony Magazine (a publication of Johnson Publishing) the world's largest Black-owned publishing company, has named Dwayne Ashley, President and CEO of The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), to its list of Most Influential Blacks in America in the May 2008 issue. This is Mr. Ashley’s fourth appearance on this prestigious list.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will join its partner, The Gallup Organization, in a unique collaboration to celebrate the accomplishments and leadership of African-American Flag Officers. This “Salute to Diversity” reception, with support from The Gallup Organization, will take place at The Gallup Building in Washington, DC on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 from 5:30 to 8:30PM.

In the spirit of preparing the next generation of leaders, Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) President and CEO, Dwayne Ashley returned to his hometown of Houston, Texas to deliver the keynote speech at TMCF member school Texas Southern University’s (TSU) Honors Day Convocation ceremony on Thursday, April 3, 2008.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will host its Inaugural South Florida Awards of Excellence at the Westin Diplomat Hotel, 3555 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL, on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 6:00PM. This exciting evening hosted in honor of distinguished Floridians will include a reception, dinner, program, and dancing featuring Leesa Richards and her band. Proceeds from the Awards of Excellence will help TMCF to provide merit scholarships and programmatic support to students at 47 public Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) including six law schools. Florida A&M University is a member university of the Fund.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and its Center for Innovative HBCU School Reform Partnership brought together five students to participate in the Fund’s 2008 Civic Responsibility Student Conference (CRSC). The second annual CRSC was hosted from Tuesday, April 1st - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 in the nation's capitol. In addition to these five, more than 80 students from the Fund's 47 member public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participated as well.
