Summary:
The Institute has been created as a response to the critical need to prepare effective highly qualified teachers. Research studies show highly qualified, experienced teachers improve student performance at all ability levels. Therefore, Public HBCUs are uniquely positioned to drive improvements in our public education system because they educate nearly half the minority teachers in our public schools. The mission of this Institute is to supplement, not supplant, the extraordinary work already being performed at our 47 member Public HBCUs.
The HBCU Teacher Preparation Institute pilot is a three day program designed to evaluate the content of a four-week long summer program to be offered in subsequent years. The pilot program would provide future graduates of the Public HBCU education departments with an intense immersion in the latest theories, techniques, and practices associated with exemplary teaching. During this year’s pilot program, pre-service teachers will engage in a condensed version of the proposed Teacher Preparation Institute Curriculum. The courses are designed to broaden the scope of awareness of pre-service teachers to the type of challenges facing teachers in high-need school environments.
