2006 TMCF GENDER STUDY REPORT

Picture of the cover of TMCF 2006 Gender Study Report

This study provides three perspectives on gender issues at 45 public historically Black colleges and universities in the United States and its territories. The study was undertaken to provide a framework and background for discussing the consequences and opportunities presented by the current gender composition of the faculty and student bodies of public historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Findings are based on three sources: a national survey of male and female faculty, a national survey of male and female students, and secondary statistical data collected by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education (NAFEO), and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

 TMCF 2006 ANNUAL REPORT

  2005 Report

Five Innovations for America’s Future
Innovation. Most corporations and organizations know that uncovering a wealth of great untapped ideas, out-of-box thinking and building an organization in which invention and creativity play a vigorous role in the culture, can bring transformational results. At the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, innovation springs from a conscious, purposeful focus on identifying areas of opportunities
that have a broad and long-term impact on students, member universities, industry and society. From this purposeful analysis, Five Innovations for America’s Future were identified and are now part of TMCF’s expanded mission. Leadership Development; Capacity Building; School Reform; Research; and Talent Sourcing. At first glance, one might not view these five strategic innovations as new or different. However, the difference is in the application; TMCF is using its Five Innovations to get quantifiable results and to change the landscape of education, leadership preparation, talent development, industry, communities and societal progress.

2004-2005 DEMOGRAPHIC REPORT

  Demographic

The demographic report will provide an in-depth look at the enormous impact that public HBCUs make in their local, regional, statewide and national communities. It will also highlight the challenges these important institutions currently face. TMCF works on behalf of our students, alumni and faculty to continue to further open doors that historically have been closed to public HBCUs in philanthropy, government and corporate sectors. Eighty percent of the HBCU student population attends public HBCUs, making our member universities a major source for domestic and international employers seeking to tap talented and well-prepared leaders for critical management positions.

TMCF 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

  2005 Report

Nineteen years ago, exceptionally bright young people attending public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) did not have a national source providing the much-needed merit-based scholarships and programmatic support, even though 90 percent of those students require some form of financial assistance.
