Controller

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Controller for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund will work with the Vice President of Operations to manage the daily financial operations and HR functions. The successful candidate will possess a commitment to “Prepare a New Generation of Leaders”, strong non-profit accounting background, the ability to multi-task, excellent organizational skills, and strong written and oral communication skills.

SALARY RANGE: $55K mid $60’s K depending on experience

REPORTING TO: The Controller will report to the VP for Operations & Finance and supervise the Office Manager/Receptionist.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Controller will be responsible for the following functions:

  • Manage the input of vendor invoices into Accounts Payable system
  • Prepare all journal entries to post General Ledger
  • Reconcile monthly bank statements
  • Liaison with independent auditors. Assist with the preparation of audit schedules.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial schedules for funding proposals
  • Coordinate all Human Resource activities including: job posting, interviewing, new hire orientation, sick/vacation tracking, and benefits administration
  • Process full time and temporary employee payroll with Paychex payroll system
  • Create & administer surveys regarding employee satisfaction and training needs
  • Manage Trademark initiative
  • Ensure all operational insurances (Property & Liability, Director & Officers, Bonding, Special Events, Workers Compensation) are current
  • Ensure all state registrations are filed by deadline annually
  • Supervise Office Manager/Receptionist
  • Maintain personnel files and records
  • Work with department heads to ensure timely completion of all performance reviews
  • Provide internal management reports as needed
  • Update Personnel, Operations, & Travel and Policy Manual as needed
  • Other duties as needed

REQUIREMENTS:

The Controller must have a minimum of five to seven years of experience in a non-profit environment. The Controller must have experience in working with large groups of people and understanding of non-profit fund accounting. Must have a bachelor’s degree in the accounting or finance area. Be familiar with accounting software, Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint. (Familiarity with Financial Edge a plus)

Major Gifts/ Foundations Relations

The Major Gifts/ Foundations Relations manages and provides information and analyses in support of fund-raising initiatives; researches, creates, writes and oversees delivery of effective proposals. The position complements the development efforts of the Corporate Relations Officers, the President and all staff involved in direct fund solicitation.

The Major Gifts/ Foundations Relations must have the following qualifications:

  • The ability to propose and fundraise programmatic initiatives to Corporate, Foundation and Individuals;
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of in Raiser’s Edge, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet and various on-line information systems, including commercial databases such as Lexis/Nexus, iWave, etc.;
  • Excellent editing skills, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • The ability to use a broad-based knowledge of research methods and data analysis techniques to support decision makers with clear, relevant, accurate information and recommendations;
  • Work effectively as a team member;
  • Familiarity with secondary and higher education policy and programming issues;
  • Write effectively and creatively in a fast-paced environment with a proven track record of achievement in the funding arena;
  • Network of foundation contacts, preferably at the foundation program officer level or better and in the area of education;
  • Bachelor’s degree required (advance degree preferred);
  • 2-4 years experience soliciting and writing proposals in a national development environment is preferred.

Position Reports To: Vice President of Development & Government Affairs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage/provide information and analyses, making recommendations in support of fund-raising initiatives.
  • Provide analytical support regarding a broad array of subjects and aspects of TMCF, corporations, foundations and individual donors.
  • Deliver $2 million in annual revenue from new sources.
  • Participate in ongoing data collection, analysis and dissemination of information.
  • Develop databases and related activities in support of the Development effort.
  • Identify, research, verify, and manage information—often highly confidential.
  • Accountable for major writing and editing assignments, including various types of proposals and concept papers for foundation, corporate, and/or high net worth individual audiences.
  • Manage the grants flow, including maintaining the grants portion of Raiser’s Edge and grant/donor files.
  • Research potential funders for new applications and maintain an awareness of donor activities and deadlines for renewal grants and types of fundable projects.
  • Work with other members of the Development Team, Programs Department and external organizations in writing proposals and coordinating reports to funders.
